Losing Sight

I'm taking verses 17 - 21 from Chapter 2 of Jeremiah today. Remember we left off with God speaking to Jeremiah about how his people had turned from him and followed worthless idols.

In the following verses from this chapter, God continues to point out how the people have sinned.

Verse 17 : "Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the Lord your God?"

Verse 19: "Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the Lord your God and have no awe of me, declares the Lord, The Lord Almighty."

Verse 20: " Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, "I will not serve you." Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree, you lay down as a prositute. I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?"

Again, I see how this can be said of the United States, among other countries, who have put the almighty dollar first, who have allowed laws to be enacted that are contrary to God's laws, who coddle the ones who call evil good, and good evil. We are now seeing the consequences of this behavior.

Who is to blame for the economic disasters that have happened in our country over the last few weeks? Everyone seems to be pointing their fingers at everyone else, and yet I think they are ALL to blame. Our country has been so focused on being "politcally correct" and allowing those who were not in the mainstream of making enough money to buy houses, to get loans put through so it would be "fair" to them. What happened to the ideology of working hard and earning something?

We are in danger of God's wrath if we continue to allow our country to lose sight of God and forsake him and his laws. We are guilty of what verse 20 says in that we have "broken off our yoke and torn off our bonds and said, I will not serve you". He compares us to a prostitute, instead of his bride. This SHOULD bring shame and repentance.

He brought our forefathers here from foreign lands in order that they might start a new country whose foundations were laid on Godly principles. We have such a rich heritage, and like we see in verse 21 - we were "planted like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock". We have allowed ourselves to "become a corrupt and wild vine", as it says in verse 21.

As I've said before, we need to cry out to God for mercy; we need to cry out to him to put Godly men and women into office locally, statewide, and nationally. We need to pray that the leaders he allows to be elected bring about God's perfect will.
Take a look around the world - look at God's word and see what he says to us through the prophets and through Jesus in the Gospels about how things will happen before Jesus returns for those who are believers, and then the times of Tribulation begin. He says that the closer we get to those times, that the world will grow darker and more evil, but that we are to be lights in that darkness.
Be that light in someone's life today - and if you're someone who doesn't know the Lord personally, I pray you will allow those who are trying to bring you to the place of salvation, a chance to share with you the Gospel - the good news that you can have a new life in Christ Jesus.

Shalom,
Janelle
